Description: How are today's conflict resolution specialists trained? Our panel will discuss the elements included in our state's stand-alone conflict resolution training programs and options available through higher education including conflict resolution certifications and degrees.

"Conflict Resolution Programs in Higher Education"
Description: Alternative dispute resolution has been a recognized force for over three decades. As conflict resolution asserts itself in both the court-annexed and private arenas as a noted profession, the opportunity and demand for more formalized academic preparation for its practitioners has increased. Joe L. "Joey" Cope describes the birth and development of one such educational program and casts a vision for the future.

"Peeling Organizational Conflict"
Description: Conflict resolution professionals recognize the applicability of negotiation and mediation skills to settings within businesses, non-profits, schools, and government agencies. In this presentation, Joe L. "Joey" Cope addresses the need for systematic analysis of intertwined interests with a view toward bringing ADR (appropriate dispute resolution) to organizations through conflict management systems.

"Building the Organization's Core Competence for Conflict Resolution"
Description: In this session, Joe L. "Joey" Cope provides a template for building a culture of understanding and collaboration to organizations through proven conflict management system design features.

"Resolution Before the Fact"
Description: In the face of rapid change, today's organization is challenged to adapt quickly and appropriately to challenges and opportunities. Joe L. "Joey" Cope explores emerging opportunities for conflict resolution professionals to employ their skills in guiding leaders in preparing for and dealing with change in corporate vision and planning contexts.

"Power Imbalance in Mediation Balancing the Power... or Facilitating a Community of Power?"
Description: The power dynamic among mediation participants is a reality that challenges the skills of the conflict resolution specialists. Chris Crilley presents a creative view of acknowledging and working with the differences in the power of the parties at the mediation table.
3:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
"Ethical Issues for Mediators: Rules and Common Sense"
Description: The practice of mediation creates situations where the ethics of the mediator can be challenged. Our panel of mediators will consider common mediation challenges in the context of the specific ethical rules for mediators and their professions of origin. The discussion will be designed to help recognize, avoid, and deal with fact patterns that frequently arise in the day to day practice of mediation.
Friday's Session is an IAM approved training that will satisfy IAM's annual requirement for continuing education, including the requirement for family mediator training of one hour in mediation ethics and one hour in domestic abuse and power imbalance issues.

Fees include materials, refreshments at breaks, the Thursday evening reception and the Friday luncheon. The Thursday evening reception will include a cash bar.

Thursday's Conference Session will be held at the UNI Commons. To reach the UNI Commons from Highway 20, take exit 225 (Industrial Park exit) onto Highway 58 North. Take the University Avenue Exit. Turn left onto University (going west). Turn right at the corner of College and University (the second set of stoplights), go four blocks north, turn left at the corner of College and 23rd Street (Copyworks is on the corner). Go two blocks. The Commons is located on your left between Barlett and Lawther Hall; drop-off is in front of the building and parking located across the street from Bartlett Hall and on the street.

To reach the Clarion from Highway 20, take exit 225 (Industrial Park exit) onto Highway 58 North. Take the University Avenue Exit. Turn right onto University (going east). The hotel is located across from the College Square Mall on the left (north) side of University Avenue approximately 3 blocks east of the exit.
Free parking is available at the Clarion.
The Clarion has reserved a limited block of rooms at $89.00 per night for conference attendees. Be sure to mention the Iowa Association of Mediators when calling in for your reservation. We recommend making reservations as soon as possible.
